Members of the PLACE Collective come together for a group exhibtion in Grizedale Forest gallery. 'How are artists responding to local and global climate and nature crises? What does their work bring into focus, which absences does it highlight, whose voices are brought in? These and other questions are addressed through artwork in a range of media, offering both beauty and concern, attitudes of slowness as well as urgency. '
I'm delighted to be part of this thoughtful group of individuals and have made a site specific work on the summit of Carron Crag, the highest point in Grizedale Forest, titled: 06.58 Carron Crag 19.10 Epoch
'This process-based drawing was made in, of and about the landscape; the summit of Carron Crag. It is the result of a particular set of conditions, in a particular place, over a particular span of time. It records celestial time, geological time and human time as well as the weather patterns unique to that day and site.
By relentlessly tracing shadows of the indigenous Silurian rock between sunrise and sunset, now displaced below, this work is a meditation on time and space and encourages us to think about the transient but interconnected nature of what we share with the world. '
I have chosen to exhibit this drawing in combination with the rock itself, the source of the drawn shadows, on a purpose-made steel-framed table which is the same height and size of the drawing table I use to make the drawing. The drawing sits upon a low carbon concrete slab made with crushed Silurian rock sourced from Grizedale, the exact same rock type which I used to make my drawing.
